I would also like to have minute marks at 2 minute intervals on the track. This is how we used to plan in early stage RAF training and was really helpful. On longer legs we would also put a position fix in abeam an obvious ground feature.

Agreed but as adhawkins points out its very difficult to fix a waypoint along a leg and keep the bearings of that leg constant to create a waypoint say abeam the railway bridge, etc etc . I suppose I should have said it would be nice if a leg could have intermediate waypoints which would not permit a change in direction but that can slide along that leg so that you're intermediate points can be printed on your plog to check progress along that leg.

Flying VFR I like my checkpoints to coincide with features on the ground I can identify. And there's always enough of them around so that I can easily create a waypoint there and it "sticks" in place.

I am a very pedantic stickler when it comes to user interface design. One can easily be led down the garden path by implementing every and sundry features. But the implementation of each feature comes at a price: more difficult to use, steeper learning curve, more cluttered interface, etc. I, for one, am happy that the SD development team chose a rather restrictive path in this respect.

I would also find it very useful to be able to judge distance along a leg quickly and easily. Maybe this could be done by using alternating colors for the route. Colors change after a suitable user selectable (or determined by software) increment, e.g., every 10, 20, 50 miles/km/nm.

Regarding a route midpoint: I would prefer to stay in control of that, meaning that if I want to know where the midpoint is I will define a waypoint at this location.

I would find it particularly useful to have an option to draw 10deg drift lines at either end and either side of a leg on a route. Also the ability to divide a leg either into equal lengths, so a mid point could be marked and possibly appear on the PLOG also. Or to draw marks long a leg starting at either end to mark distance increments or time increments.
